RADICA Reinvents Truck Camping With Hard-Shell Aluminum Topper and East-West Sleeping

Every now and then, a product comes along that makes you stop and ask, “Why didn’t someone think of this years ago?”

That was exactly the reaction many outdoor enthusiasts had when they first laid eyes on the original RADICA MoonLander. At first glance it looked like an ordinary truck topper. Then someone opened the rear hatch, climbed inside, and stretched out comfortably across the width of the truck bed—without a rooftop tent, without a pop-up roof, and without sacrificing the truck bed itself.

It was one of those ideas that seemed so obvious once you saw it.

Five years later, that simple idea has grown into one of the fastest-rising companies in the lightweight truck camping world.

Today, RADICA operates out of a 20,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Denver, Colorado, employing more than 20 people and producing an expanding lineup of innovative truck bed campers and accessories. At the center of that lineup sits the company’s newest flagship—the MoonLander X—a hard-shell truck bed camper that continues to challenge traditional ideas about what a lightweight camper can be.

Perhaps even more impressive than the product itself is the story behind it.

It All Started with One Frustrated Camper

Like many successful companies, RADICA wasn’t born from an elaborate business plan. It started because founder and CEO Luke Bushek couldn’t find the camper he wanted to buy.

Luke had a simple wish list. He wanted something lightweight. He wanted something weatherproof. He wanted something rugged enough for everyday use. And he wanted a camper that required absolutely zero setup after arriving at camp.

The more he searched, the more he realized that nothing on the market checked every box. So instead of compromising, he did what many engineers eventually do—he designed his own.

Working inside a modest 20-by-30-foot garage in Denver during 2021, Luke began building an aluminum topper prototype unlike anything else on the market.

The secret was surprisingly simple.

Rather than building upward like a traditional truck camper, Luke extended narrow side pods just beyond the truck bed rails. Those extra 8.5 inches on each side created enough interior width for adults to sleep east-to-west across the truck bed. The platform can even be converted into a full-length sofa.

It sounds like a small detail. In reality, it completely changed the camping experience.

A Camping Trip That Changed Everything

Some inventions quietly evolve over years. Others explode almost overnight.

Luke’s prototype got its first real test during a camping trip through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Wherever he stopped, people gathered. Campers walked over.

Questions followed. “What is that?” “Who makes it?” “Can I buy one?”

The attention surprised Luke.

Curious whether there was genuine demand, he listed the camper on Craigslist after returning home.

Within days, three customers had placed orders. That was all the validation he needed.

RADICA was officially in business.

Growing Faster Than Expected

Success came quickly–too quickly, in fact.

Those first customer orders immediately outgrew Luke’s garage, forcing the young company into a modest 1,500-square-foot warehouse during early 2022.

Luke left his previous career and committed to RADICA full-time. He hired his first employees.

Production climbed to one camper per week.

For many startups, that would have represented an excellent first year. RADICA wasn’t finished.

Demand continued growing. Before the year ended, the company had already expanded again—this time into a 3,000-square-foot facility where it built its first assembly line, doubled its workforce, and increased production to three campers every week.

Fast forward to today, and the numbers tell the story.

RADICA now manufactures its campers inside a 20,000-square-foot factory in Denver with a team of 23 employees and continues increasing production month after month.

For a company that began inside a residential garage just five years ago, it’s an impressive climb.

Manufacturing Isn’t New to Luke

While RADICA may be young, its founder isn’t new to manufacturing.

Luke’s background in manufacturing engineering helped shape nearly every aspect of the company—from product design to factory organization. Rather than simply building campers, he built a manufacturing system.

The company embraces lean manufacturing principles inspired by Toyota, emphasizing efficiency, consistency, cleanliness, and continuous improvement.

Every morning begins with team meetings. Every workstation follows 5S organizational practices.

Employees are encouraged to identify small improvements every day. It’s not flashy. But it’s incredibly effective.

That disciplined approach has allowed RADICA to scale rapidly without sacrificing quality—a remarkable achievement for a company that remains entirely bootstrapped.

Meet the MoonLander X

If the original MoonLander put RADICA on the map, the new MoonLander X takes the concept several steps further.

Think of it as the evolution of everything customers loved about the original. It still mounts to the truck like a topper. It still maintains a sleek profile. It still requires virtually no setup. But now it offers more headroom, more storage, and significantly greater versatility.

Perhaps the biggest surprise? It still weighs dramatically less than traditional truck campers.

Depending on size and options, the MoonLander X tips the scales between just 320 and 520 pounds. That’s less than half the weight of many hard-side truck campers with cabover sleeping areas.

For truck owners concerned about payload, suspension modifications, or fuel economy, that’s a significant advantage.

Sleeping Sideways Has Never Made More Sense

One of RADICA’s defining innovations remains its east-to-west sleeping platform.

Thanks to the camper’s full-length side pods, adults can stretch out sideways across the truck bed—even inside a compact 5-foot mid-size pickup.

No climbing into a rooftop tent. No unfolding fabric walls. No raising a roof. No dealing with zippers or canvas during bad weather. Simply park. Open the rear hatch. Go to bed.

It’s an elegantly simple solution to a problem that has challenged truck camper designers for decades.

Three Campers in One

The MoonLander X isn’t content being just a sleeping platform. Its interior quickly transforms to suit different adventures.

In Bed Mode, the sleeping panels lay flat to create a queen-sized mattress with nearly 40 inches of headroom.

Switch to Couch Mode, and those same panels fold into a full-width interior sofa—perfect for reading, relaxing, or escaping rainy weather.

Need to haul motorcycles, kayaks, mountain bikes, or construction materials? That’s where Stow Mode comes in. The sleeping platform and mattress store neatly inside the cabover section, opening nearly the entire truck bed for cargo.

It’s the kind of flexibility that appeals equally to weekend campers, outdoor athletes, contractors, and overland travelers.

Storage Where It Belongs

Traditional truck campers often use their cabover section exclusively for sleeping. RADICA saw an opportunity.

Instead of adding another bed overhead, the MoonLander X dedicates that entire area to storage. The result? A lighter camper. Better aerodynamics. Lower overall weight. And an enormous storage compartment perfect for bedding, clothing, recovery gear, camping equipment, or seasonal items.

Sometimes doing less accomplishes more.

Built Like a Truck

The MoonLander X isn’t designed for campground life alone. It’s engineered for rough roads, washboard trails, and years of adventure.

The structure begins with an all-welded aluminum frame paired with reinforced aluminum panels. The roof features a 1.25-inch honeycomb panel with a UV-stabilized polypropylene core capable of supporting 300 pounds while driving and an impressive 500 pounds when parked.

Premium stainless-steel hardware and marine-grade sealants further reinforce the camper against weather and corrosion.

The overall impression is one of purposeful engineering rather than unnecessary complexity.

Built for Your Truck—Not Somebody Else’s

Walk through the parking lot of any trailhead today and you’ll find everything from compact Ford Mavericks to one-ton diesel pickups. RADICA wanted one camper platform capable of serving them all.

Every MoonLander X is custom fabricated for the customer’s specific truck. Five different bed sizes accommodate virtually every mid-size and full-size pickup currently on the market.

Whether you own a Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Ford F-150, Ram 2500, or Ford F-350, the camper is built specifically for your truck rather than adapted afterward.

Customers also choose options à la carte.

Rather than paying for features they may never use, buyers can configure a camper that matches both their camping style and their budget.

Comfortable in Every Season

Lightweight doesn’t have to mean uncomfortable. RADICA offers a full insulation package adding only 35 to 60 pounds while delivering an R-7 insulation rating. Yes, you read that right—R-7.

The interior receives automotive-grade carpet, marine foam decking, and Velcro-compatible walls for endless customization possibilities.

Need air conditioning? There’s a rooftop AC option.

Camping during winter? The camper includes a diesel heater port for cold-weather adventures.

It’s a thoughtful collection of options that transforms a minimalist shell into a surprisingly capable four-season shelter.

American Made, From Start to Finish

In an era when many RV manufacturers outsource large portions of production, RADICA keeps everything under one roof. Design. Engineering. Welding. Assembly. Installation. It all happens inside the company’s Denver factory.

That approach provides tighter quality control while allowing engineers and production teams to work side-by-side when refining new products.

Every camper also undergoes water testing inside a dedicated rain simulation station before leaving the factory.

If a leak exists, RADICA intends to find it before the customer does.

More Than One Great Idea

Although the MoonLander X may grab the headlines, it’s only part of RADICA’s growing lineup.

The original MoonLander remains available for buyers seeking an even lighter, more affordable side-pod camper.

The Rover introduces a revolutionary topper featuring integrated roof racks and remarkable storage capacity.

Meanwhile, the Afterburner modular camp kitchen complements every camper in the lineup, bringing organized cooking wherever adventure leads.

It’s clear that RADICA sees itself as more than a camper company. It’s building an ecosystem.

Simplicity as a Design Philosophy

Ask many manufacturers what makes their products special, and you’ll hear about electronics, automation, or luxury amenities. RADICA takes a different approach.

Its philosophy is refreshingly simple: Engineer products to be as simple as possible while still delivering the functionality customers actually need. Less complexity means fewer parts. Fewer parts mean fewer failures. Fewer failures mean more time exploring and less time making repairs.

It’s a philosophy that resonates with backcountry travelers who often venture hundreds of miles from the nearest dealership.

Looking Toward the Future

RADICA’s growth shows no signs of slowing. The company continues investing in advanced manufacturing equipment, including CNC routers and newly acquired CNC laser cutting systems, allowing even greater precision and production capacity.

Additional camper models, accessories, and innovative products are already on the horizon.

If the company’s first five years are any indication, the next five could be even more exciting.
