Truck Camper Adventure (TCA) is holding its 3rd annual Boondocking in the Desert Rally this week in Quartzsite, Arizona. The owners of 300 campers, from all over the United States and Canada, have enrolled in what is expected to be the largest truck camper rally ever held.
The free, outdoor event will be held at the Roadrunner Wash Bureau of Land Management (BLM) area, February 10-13, 6 miles south of town. As the name implies, TCA’s 2022 Boondocking in the Desert Rally will be held on public land without hookups. Separate areas will be designated for campers using solar power and generators.
We’re really excited about this year’s truck camper rally. We’re gratified by the response we’ve received from truck camper owners across the country. In three years, the rally has really grown. The first year, we had 47 campers and last year, 107. We capped this year’s rally to 300 to keep the number manageable for our small staff. Unfortunately, we had to turn away dozens and dozens who wanted to attend this year’s event.
In a testament to how the Truck Camper Adventure rally has grown, a record number 26 sponsors are supporting the 2022 event. A partial list of sponsors include Lance, Hellwig, Expion360, Garmin, Four Wheel Campers, Host Industries, SuperSprings, Timbren, nuCamp RV, StableCamper, Harvest Hosts, and Truck Systems Technology.
We weren’t sure if a boondocking rally would resonate with the community, but it really has, in a BIG way. More and more people are getting into truck camping and want to learn the basics of off-grid camping and off-road exploring and what that entails. Our rally helps educate owners and helps build camaraderie in the community. Three specialized classes will be taught by Bob Wohlers of the Off-Road Safety Academy.
A wide assortment of truck camper makes and models, led by Lance Campers, Host, Northwood Mfg, and Four Wheel Campers, will be represented by owners from 35 states and four Canadian provinces. Several models of campers and new truck camper support products will also be on display by sponsors KingStar, CamperCradle, Tag-Trailer, Nimbl Vehicles, Garmin, StableCamper, BundutecUSA, and Hellwig. Rugged Mountain Campers will be revealing its brand-new flatbed model to the public as well.
The four-day itinerary includes a variety of activities. Classes on basic tire repair, solar power, alternator battery charging, navigation, lithium batteries, full-time living in a truck camper, radio communications, water filtration, suspension modifications, and off-road essentials will be offered to educate and inform. Campfire socials, a Saturday night raffle, and a Sunday truck camper open house are also scheduled. For the first time ever, event leaders will also be awarding a “best rig” for the best truck camper setup. The winner of the award will receive a trophy and prizes.
Quartzsite is great place to hold a truck camper rally during the winter. The weather will be perfect with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. With six BLM areas around town, there’s tons of public land there where you can camp for free. We chose the Roadrunner Wash BLM area because it relatively close to town, but not too close if you know what I mean. Quartzsite has almost everything a boondocker needs to chill out and relax, including decent cell service, vendors, gas stations, potable water, dump stations, grocery stores, and restaurants.
The TCA Boondocking in the Desert Rally is not open to the public. Only those who pre-registered through Truck Camper Adventure will be allowed to attend.
Sounds like a great time and lots to learn! Hope a lot of my truck camper friends will be able to attend!
