Quartzsite Rally will Feature this Impressive Lance Camper Restomod

One of the great things about attending one of our annual Truck Camper Adventure rallies is that you can tour and see hundreds of truck campers. These run the gamut from old and new, to big and small. Another great thing about our rallies is that you can learn much not only from the many classes that we host, but also from others who, like you, have passion for truck campers and for travel. Of course, having fun is what the rally is all about and part of that fun is recognizing the top truck camper rigs at each rally. One couple who will be entering our 2025 contest is Michael and Twylla Comeaux who transformed their outdated, weather beaten Lance Camper into a modern, technological marvel. To learn more about this comprehensive restoration-modification, we spoke with Michael.

At the 2025 Truck Camper Adventure Quartzsite Rally

Thanks for talking with us, Michael. Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?

Michael Comeaux: When my wife Twylla and I first planned our empty-nester adventures, the vision was clear: cruising across the country in our 40-foot fifth wheel camper, exploring all the beauty America has to offer. It was a dream that seemed perfect—until a simple scroll through YouTube changed everything.

I stumbled across a series of videos about truck campers. These compact, versatile homes-on-wheels showcased a way of travel I hadn’t seriously considered before. The ability to navigate tight trails, camp off-grid in dispersed locations, and explore rugged terrain sparked a fire in me. It wasn’t long before I couldn’t stop thinking about how much simpler and more adventurous our travels could be.

I pitched the idea to Twylla, and while she may have rolled her eyes at yet another one of my “crazy ideas,” she ultimately got on board. After all, she knows that when I set my mind to something, it usually leads to a great story. So, we sold the fifth wheel, rebuilt and remodeled a Lance truck camper, and named her Betty White—a nod to her elegance and durability.

These days, our adventures are a mix of overland travel and dispersed camping. I work a two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off schedule in West Texas, so we make the most of my time off by hitting the road. Twylla takes care of everything on the home front, and her patience with my endless projects (and YouTube-inspired plans) is truly unmatched.

But it was our kids who took this journey to the next level. Seeing how much fun we were having with Betty White and how passionate we’d become about truck camping, they encouraged us to start a YouTube channel to document our travels and future builds. They even came up with the name: Runaway Parents. Their reasoning? We’d raised them, launched them into the world, and now it was time for us to “run away” and live our best lives on the road.

With Runaway Parents, we’ve found a way to connect with a growing community of adventurers, sharing everything from breathtaking campsites to DIY camper upgrades and solar builds. It’s been a learning curve, but the joy of capturing our experiences—and maybe inspiring others to chase their dreams—makes it all worthwhile.

Can you tell us about your truck camper and why you chose that particular make and model?

Michael Comeaux: We had a clear vision in mind: a rig that could handle off-grid adventures, dispersed camping, and overland travel with ease. We scoured the market for the perfect camper, balancing affordability with potential.

Our search led us to a 2002 Lance 915 model listed on Marketplace—just a short drive from home. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough to spark excitement. For $1,300, we purchased the camper, which had seen better days. Severe water damage had ravaged the cabover, making it a project most people would avoid. But we saw its potential.

With a passion for DIY and a love for bringing things back to life, we knew this Lance 915 was the camper for us. The challenge of transforming it into something extraordinary made it all the more special.

Can you tell us more about your restoration-modification?

Michael Comeaux: What makes this camper truly special is the transformation it underwent in our hands. We completely remodeled the interior, creating a space that is not only functional but also reflects our personal style and needs. The upgrades didn’t stop there—we installed an insanely large solar system capable of supporting extended off-grid stays, ensuring we can power everything we need, from appliances to gadgets, without compromise.

Every single component of the camper has been upgraded or replaced, from high-efficiency appliances to modern fixtures and finishes. It’s now a one-of-a-kind overlanding rig, equipped to handle any adventure we throw at it.

The challenge of turning a water-damaged Lance 915 into a custom, self-sufficient travel machine has made every moment of this journey more rewarding. It’s not just a camper—it’s a testament to what can be achieved with creativity, determination, and a little bit of elbow grease.

What do you like best about your camper?

Michael Comeaux: My favorite feature is that it is shockingly spacious for its size and I love the layout. Twylla loves that she can take her home wherever she goes! And of course we are both super proud of the entire completed project!

Can you tell us more about your truck?

Michael Comeaux: We rely on our 2016 Ram 3500 Limited SRW to haul our 2002 Lance. This powerhouse combines luxury, durability, and capability, making it the ideal companion for overland travel and off-grid exploration.

Equipped with a 4-inch PMF suspension lift paired with Fox 2.0 shocks, the truck delivers exceptional off-road performance and a smooth, stable ride, even on rugged terrain. Its 8-foot bed provides ample space to securely carry our camper, while the factory-installed load-leveling air bags ensure the weight is evenly distributed and the ride remains comfortable no matter how heavy the load.

The Limited trim offers unmatched comfort and style, with premium leather interiors and advanced technology to make every trip enjoyable. Whether we’re climbing mountain trails, navigating forest roads, or cruising on the highway, our Ram 3500 handles it all with confidence and ease. This truck isn’t just a vehicle—it’s a vital part of our journey.

Can you tell us more about your campers electrical system including your solar power and your DC/DC charging system

Michael Comeaux: One of the most impressive features of our 2002 Lance 915 camper is the custom-built solar and electrical system we designed to support our off-grid lifestyle. On the roof, we’ve mounted 1,600 watts of Canadian Solar panels on an actuated tilt system, supported by a custom-built aluminum structure. This setup not only maximizes solar efficiency by allowing us to angle the panels toward the sun but also ensures the structure is lightweight and durable for rugged travel. Additionally, we carry 400 watts of foldable ANKER ground-deploy solar panels,  giving us flexibility when parked in shaded areas or during lower-sunlight conditions. We also carry with us an ANKER F2000 PowerStation for our device charging needs .

The heart of our power system is a bank of three EG4 LL V2 server rack batteries, providing a total of 600 amp hours at 24 volts. These advanced batteries seamlessly communicate with our Victron equipment, creating a highly efficient and reliable power storage solution. Our solar input is managed by a Victron Smart Solar MPPT 250/100 TR Smart charge controller, which ensures we’re making the most of every ray of sunlight.

For DC-to-DC charging, we rely on the Orion TR Smart 12/24-15, and our primary inverter is the powerful Victron MultiPlus 2 24/3,000/70, giving us plenty of capacity to power all our devices and appliances. To enhance the 12 volt system, we’ve upgraded the house battery to a Redodo 12.8 volt 100Ah heated lithium battery, which is kept charged by the Orion TR Smart 24/12-20 DC-to-DC charger.

Tying it all together is a Victron Cerbo GX, which allows us to monitor and manage the entire system through a sleek Touch 70 display. Whether we’re running our camper’s systems, charging gear, or preparing for long off-grid stays, this solar setup gives us complete energy independence.

This ambitious solar project would not have been possible without the expertise and support of Signature Solar in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Their guidance and quality products were instrumental in turning our vision into reality. Thanks to them, we now have a system that not only meets but exceeds the demands of our off-grid lifestyle.

Have you made any modifications to your truck to carry your truck camper or to improve its ride?

Michael Comeaux: When it came to securing our 2002 Lance 915 camper to our 2016 Ram 3500, we knew we wanted the best in stability and safety. That’s why we partnered with Torklift International, a leader in truck camper accessories. Their expertise, unmatched product quality, and outstanding customer support made the entire process seamless.

One of the first upgrades we made was installing Torklift Talon frame-mounted tie-downs, paired with their FastGun Turnbuckles. This combination provides an ultra-secure connection between the truck and camper, ensuring stability even on rough terrain. The Talon tie-downs are constructed from lightweight, military-grade aluminum, which makes them not only strong but also corrosion-resistant—a must for anyone who loves off-road adventures.

To further enhance our truck’s towing capabilities, we added Torklift’s 30K SuperHitch and a 24-inch SuperTruss extension. This setup ensures that we can safely tow additional gear or a trailer without compromising the integrity of our truck or camper. For added stability, we also installed StableLoads on the leaf springs. These dramatically improved our suspension, eliminating sag and maintaining a level ride even when the camper is fully loaded.

What truly sets Torklift International apart is their commitment to quality and customer care. Their products are built to last, designed specifically for the unique demands of truck camper enthusiasts. Whether we had questions about installation or needed advice on the best setup for our needs, their support team was always available with expert guidance.

Thanks to Torklift International, our truck and camper feel like one solid, unified system, ready to tackle any road or trail. Their attention to detail and dedication to customer satisfaction make them a brand we wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking to elevate their truck camping experience.

Does your rig feature any other accessories or features worthy of note?

Michael Comeaux: We’ve outfitted our 2002 Lance 915 with a range of features and accessories to maximize comfort and convenience on the road. One of the standout additions is the flat-mount Starlink Gen 3 satellite dish installed on the roof. This ensures we have reliable, high-speed internet connectivity no matter how remote our travels take us, keeping us connected for work, navigation, and sharing our adventures.

To tackle hot summer days and chilly nights, we upgraded to the RecPro 13,500 BTU Houghton low-profile air conditioner with heat capabilities. Equipped with a soft start feature, it’s efficient and quiet, making it perfect for off-grid use. We also replaced all the original roof vents with upgraded MaxxAir fans, providing excellent ventilation throughout the camper.

Inside, we focused on modernizing the kitchen for both style and functionality. We installed a Dometic convection microwave, a RecPro three-burner range with a matching vent hood, and a sleek RecPro refrigerator. These upgrades transformed the kitchen into a space where we can easily prepare meals, whether we’re cooking a quick snack or a full dinner. To top it off, we added a butcher block countertop with a residential sink, blending functionality with a warm, homey aesthetic.

We also reimagined the seating and dining area. By removing the original U-shaped dinette, we discovered that a futon from Walmart (with its legs removed) fit perfectly in the space. This not only created a more open and versatile layout but also gave us a comfortable spot to relax after a day of exploring.

Do you have any plans for future upgrades or modifications?

Michael Comeaux: Eventually, I would like to upgrade to a Ram 5500 with a flatbed! This setup would give us the perfect foundation for even more rugged overland adventures and off-grid living. To make it truly expedition-ready, we’d love to outfit it with LiquidSpring’s smart suspension system for a smoother ride and superior handling, especially on tough terrain.

And, of course, no build would be complete without the Buckstop Truckware treatment—custom bumpers, lighting, and storage solutions to maximize both function and style. With this dream rig, we’d be ready to tackle anything the road (or trail) throws at us while giving us even more flexibility to take Runaway Parents to the next level.

Do you have any regrets in your choices? Anything you wished that you had done differently?

Michael Comeaux: My only regret we have is that we didn’t start this sooner. The freedom, the adventure, and the joy we’ve found in exploring the open road and living life on our terms have been nothing short of incredible. If we’d known how fulfilling this lifestyle would be, we’d have jumped in years ago! It’s a reminder that sometimes the hardest part is taking that first step, but once you do, the journey can be truly life-changing

What kind of mileage are you getting?

Michael Comeaux: We average about 11 miles per gallon. Sure, it’s not the most fuel-efficient setup, but it’s a small trade-off for the freedom to explore breathtaking landscapes, camp off-grid, and wake up to a new view every day. Plus, we’ve learned to embrace slow travel, which not only saves on fuel but also lets us fully soak in each destination. Every mile feels worth it when you’re living this kind of adventure!”

What tires do you have on your truck and what inflation values do you typically run when driving on and off-road?

Michael Comeaux: Our rig is equipped with Nitto 37/12.50/20 tires, and they’ve been a game-changer for handling both on-road and off-road conditions. On the road, I run them at 65 PSI, which gives us a smooth ride and helps with stability when carrying the camper. When we hit the trails or go off-grid, I drop the pressure down to around 40 PSI. That lower pressure gives us better traction and a more comfortable ride over rough terrain. It’s all about finding the right balance

Where have you taken your rig thus far?

Michael Comeaux: We’ve explored the rugged beauty of the Ozark Mountains, winding through scenic roads and hidden gems. In Colorado, we’ve been lucky enough to travel iconic routes like the Million Dollar Highway, experience the charm of Silverton, and even venture up to Animas Forks, immersing ourselves in the history of the old mining town. Camping at Taylor Park, surrounded by towering peaks and alpine lakes, was nothing short of magical.

And let’s not forget our time in Moab, Utah, where the red rock landscapes and endless off-road trails gave us memories we’ll cherish forever. From mountain passes to desert trails, Betty White has been our gateway to adventure, and we’re just getting started!”

Where are you planning to take your rig in the future?

Michael Comeaux: Next up on our adventure list: we’ll be attending the 2025 Truck Camper Adventure Rally this February in Quartzsite, Arizona! It’s going to be an incredible opportunity to connect with fellow truck camper enthusiasts, swap stories, and pick up tips and ideas from like-minded adventurers. After that? Who knows! One of the best parts of this lifestyle is the freedom to go wherever the road (or trail) takes us. Whether it’s a new off-grid spot, a scenic route we’ve yet to explore, or just chasing good weather, the possibilities are endless.

Do you have any social media channels where our readers can follow you?

Michael Comeaux: We have two social media channels where you can follow our adventures: YouTube and Facebook.

This has been great talking to you. Do you have any final advice for our readers?

Michael Comeaux: Six months before we got our truck camper in 2023, my wife, Twylla, received a diagnosis that changed our lives—stage 2 colon cancer. She was just 47 years old. In that moment, we were reminded that life is far too short and promises nothing. After her surgery to remove the cancer and completing rounds of chemo, we received the incredible news that Twylla had a clean bill of health. That moment was a turning point for us.

We decided to make the most of every day, and that’s when our journey with Betty White, our truck camper, truly began. We rebuilt her to be something we could be proud of—a durable, off-grid-ready rig that would take us to places we’d only dreamed of. Our goal was simple: to create lasting memories and embrace life’s adventures without waiting for some distant ‘someday.’

Our message to everyone reading this is simple: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you retire or until the time seems ‘just right.’ Go see new places, even if it’s just a weekend away. Take time to relax, explore, and connect with each other. The everyday grind will always be there, but tomorrow might not be.

So pack up, hit the road, and start making those memories. Life is happening now—don’t miss it.
