The Overland Expo Foundation officially unveiled its 2026 Ultimate Overland Vehicle Build at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona. Centered around a Nissan Frontier PRO-4X and outfitted with a Tune Outdoors M1 truck topper, the lightweight mid-size platform showcases a modern approach to overlanding—one focused on capability, practicality, and accessibility. This is the sixth year of the Overland Expo’s Ultimate Build program.
Selected for its ideal balance of size, reliability, and factory-engineered off-road capability, the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X stands apart in a market crowded with oversized, overbuilt rigs. Compact enough to navigate technical trails while remaining powerful and comfortable for extended travel, the Frontier reflects a return to purpose-driven overland design that remains attainable for a broader audience.
At the heart of the camping system is the Tune Outdoors M1L, an ultra-lightweight pop-up truck topper designed to maximize utility without compromising payload capacity, fuel efficiency, or off-road performance. Weighing only 350 pounds, the M1L features all-aluminum construction, a queen-size north-south sleeping platform, panoramic canopy windows, and Tune’s modular T-track system for extensive customization. Compatible with both midsize and full-size trucks, the topper provides nearly seven feet of interior standing room while maintaining a sleek, low-profile design ideal for backcountry travel, everyday driving, and garage storage.

Built in collaboration with AllDogs Offroad Coop of Lincoln, Nebraska, the project retains the Frontier’s fully boxed frame and naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6, delivering dependable performance with long-term durability and simplified maintenance. Factory-equipped features including an electronic rear locker, steel skid plates, and favorable approach and departure angles provided a strong foundation for the build team to enhance rather than reinvent.
“The Frontier PRO-4X is one of the most honest overland platforms on the market,” said Anthony Sicola, Ultimate Vehicle Build Project Manager. “It doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and that authenticity is exactly what makes it such a capable and versatile platform for long-distance overland travel.”
The 2026 Ultimate Build rides on Black Rhino Tembo wheels wrapped in Nokian Tyres Outpost nAT all-terrain tires, providing a balance of on-road comfort and off-road durability. Recovery and self-sufficiency are supported by a ComeUp Winch USA 9.5rsi heavy-duty winch system, Freedom Recovery Gear’s Stage 4 VTV recovery kit, and Rotopax 5-Gallon Camp Jug water and fuel storage solutions paired with traction boards. Field repairs and trail preparedness are further enhanced by the Forrest Tool Company MAX Multipurpose Tool Kit and an ARB 4×4 Accessories Brushless Twin Motor onboard air system for quick tire adjustments on the trail.

For visibility, navigation, and communication, the build is equipped with a complete Diode Dynamics Stage Series lighting package that includes an exterior light bar, ditch lights, chase lights, and rock lights. Midland Radio Corporation supplied a MicroMobile GMRS radio, handheld communication system, and Bullbar Antenna to ensure reliable communication in remote areas, while onX Offroad premium navigation and trail mapping software provides detailed route planning and backcountry navigation capabilities.
Storage and organization were designed with both efficiency and durability in mind. Pelican Products CRATE 45L and 90L hard storage systems provide secure gear management, while the Tackform Slim Track Dash Bracket and all-metal mounting system offer versatile device integration inside the cab. Additional organization solutions include Nite Ize CamJam HookLock Ratchet Straps and gear management accessories, along with the TRAVOCA Rigel Dual Zone eCooler 60L for refrigerated storage. A Wilco Offroad Hitchgate tire swingout with integrated Rotopax mounts further expands utility and cargo capacity.
The ultimate build’s power system is anchored by a Battle Born 100 amp hour 12 volt LiFePO₄ deep-cycle battery paired with a REDARC Scout power management system and dual 30 watt solar panels, creating a dependable off-grid electrical setup capable of supporting extended travel.
Camping and comfort systems center around the aforementioned Tune Outdoors M1L Truck Topper, complemented by a Taruca Adventure Gear Rogue 270XC awning and Ensuite shower enclosure for expanded living space at camp. Rixen’s Enterprises supplied an integrated heating and hot water shower system to improve comfort in all conditions, while a BREEO Y Series To-Go Bundle portable fire pit, Pittman Outdoors sleep system, and Jetboil Genesis cooking system round out the vehicle’s fully self-contained overland living package.
Rather than pursuing extreme modifications, the 2026 Ultimate Build emphasizes durability, modularity, and practical functionality. Every component was carefully chosen to support extended off-grid travel, self-sufficiency, and ease of maintenance in remote environments. Kudos to the Overland Expo Foundation team for building such a capable rig.
The 2026 Ultimate Overland Vehicle Build made its debut at the Overland Expo West, May 15–17, 2026, in Flagstaff, Arizona.
