About Outfitter Manufacturing

Outfitter Manufacturing is a Longmont, Colorado-based manufacturer specializing in low-profile pop-up truck campers with a strong emphasis on lightweight construction, four-season capability, and off-grid travel. The company’s roots stretch back more than 60 years to Hubert Ward, who began building RVs in 1959 and later founded Hallmark with his son Robert. After Hallmark was sold in 2001, Robert helped his son, Brian Ward, establish Outfitter Manufacturing, carrying a third generation of the family’s RV-building experience into the new company. Outfitter grew from a small startup into a full-scale truck camper manufacturer before being acquired in early 2019 by Monarch Crest Capital, a group led by Scott Mavis. Today, Outfitter continues to build its campers in Longmont and sells them factory-direct, with each camper built to order and available with an extensive selection of options.

One of the more interesting things about Outfitter is that it employs two distinctly different construction methods across its lineup. The Caribou Lite and Caribou models use fully welded aluminum frames, vacuum-bonded composite walls, fiberglass exteriors, and block-foam insulation. The Caribou adds Outfitter’s molded True Composite Foam Core Roof, while the lightweight Caribou Lite takes a simpler approach to keep weight and cost to a minimum. The more upscale Apex and Juno dispense with conventional aluminum wall framing altogether, using Outfitter’s molded True Composite Foam Core Body and Roof. These molded fiberglass composite structures provide a rigid, durable, well-insulated shell while eliminating much of the conventional framing found in traditional truck camper construction. All of these campers employ Outfitter’s three-layer insulated Weblon soft wall, maintaining the low traveling profile that makes a pop-up so attractive for backcountry exploration.

Four-season capability has long been another Outfitter calling card, particularly with the Apex and Juno lineups, which feature a fully heated basement—an unusual feature in a pop-up truck camper. Placing the fresh and waste-water tanks inside the basement helps protect the plumbing from freezing while allowing Outfitter to install exceptionally large holding tanks. In fact, the Apex and Juno boast 44-gallon fresh, 16-gallon gray, and 16-gallon black tanks—44-16-16—giving Outfitter the largest holding-tank capacities found in any pop-up truck camper. That’s a major advantage for extended boondocking, where water and waste capacity often determine how long you can remain off-grid. The basement also provides additional interior height, allowing the Apex and Juno to offer a full stand-up shower while retaining a low-profile pop-up roof. Add the insulated Weblon soft wall, foam-core body construction, furnace, and available solar and battery upgrades, and these campers are particularly well suited for extended boondocking and cold-weather travel. The flagship Juno takes the concept even further with a side entry and fold-down rear tent room, creating an unusually large living space after the camper is set up at camp.

Compatible with the payload ratings of today’s pickup trucks, Outfitter’s current lineup covers an unusually broad range of pickup sizes and camping styles. The Caribou Lite 6.5 and 8 provide the lightest and most economical entry point, while the Caribou 6.5 and 8 add more creature comforts and the company’s composite roof while remaining suitable for properly equipped half-ton and 3/4-ton trucks. The newer Spire fills the gap between these lighter campers and the more elaborate basement models, while the Apex 8, Apex 8 LB, and Apex 9.5 provide the company’s molded composite body, heated basement, indoor shower and toilet, and class-leading 44-16-16 holding tanks for serious four-season travel. At the top sit the Juno 8.5 and Juno 10, aimed primarily at one-ton trucks and buyers who want maximum space, water capacity, and amenities in a pop-up. It’s an impressively diverse lineup from a company that has spent decades pushing the traditional pop-up truck camper far beyond its lightweight, fair-weather roots.
