ParticipantThanks, everyone! This confirms what I was thinking, and we will bite the bullet and upgrade to a larger, better tire and wheel. I think this change will help promote better peace of mind and longevity than the current set-up.
Nice pic of your rig, WyoBull! We LOVE our NL 💗

ParticipantI would ditto Mike’s comments. My tires are 275/70 R18 and I run the Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX. They are load range E. A great tire that sits squarely between a standard A/T and M/T tires.

ParticipantMy tailgate is off my truck from spring to late fall. The only thing I use if needed is a load-lock across my bed if I need to hold anything in.

ParticipantI am very happy with my 2017 F350 and 6.2 gas engine and 3.73 gears hauling my Northern Lite 8.11 SE. Yes, where I live here in Wyoming, there are times when I am going up steep grades in the mountains and hauling my ATV trailer loaded with the ATV, coolers etc. I might wish to have the diesel but at the end of the day, I am not in a race.
My truck is also my daily driver and outside of hauling my camper and pulling my ATV trailer, I rarely have any other trailer connected to it that could possibly justify me having a diesel. My previous truck was a 2016 F250 with the 6.2 gas engine and I ordered it with 4.30 gears. When I upgraded trucks (long story but was due to not having enough payload) the only thing I could find without ordering a truck had 3.73’s. To be honest with you, the difference between the two rear ends is not enough that I wish I had 4.30’s today in my F350.
That is my 2 cents for what it’s worth, which is probably not even 2 cents. LOL

ParticipantSeeing this late but comments are correct that this is an age old issue and probably the most debated one in the truck camper world.
I learned this the hard way and bought the current camper we have, a Northern Lite 8.11 SE, after I already had a near new Ford F250. My lack of knowledge at the time cost me about $6000 dollars when I made the decision to trade in my F250 with less than 10,000 miles on it for an F350 that had the payload capacity to handle our camper. Lesson learned but I am under all my published weight limits fully wet and can go down the road with confidence and sleep well at night knowing my rig is safe.2017 F350 Super Duty 4x4, CCSB, XLT Premium Package, 6.2 gas, 3.73 rear end, GVWR 11,300 lbs, Payload 4226 lbs, Silver Ingot, Camper Package, Split bench front seat, Upfitter switches, LED Box Lighting, Rear Step Tailgate, Air Lift 5000 Ultimate Airbags with Air Lift WirelessAIR on board compressor kit and remote, Torklift Upper Stableloads, Torklift tie downs w/ Fastguns

ParticipantIf I know it is going to get below freezing here in Wyoming and I have water in my system, I have a $20 dollar Wally World electric heater that I set at 60 degrees and let it run all night. I have my camper plugged into my 30 amp outlet at my house and then I open up my access door inside to my water tank so air circulates throughout my camper. I also have a non-LED light in my drain bay and sometimes I will turn it on all night because it does put off just enough heat to keep it warm enough to not freeze. I will typically not run my camper heater in this scenario.
When I first got my camper I was worried about those times during late fall and early spring where it warms up above freezing during the day and then dips below freezing at night. I asked my camper dealer about it and what I stated above is what he told me to do.

ParticipantI needed a little extra height with my 2017 Ford F350 and 2017 Northern Lite 8.11 SE between the cab and bottom of the camper so following is what I did.
I bought 2 qty 4’x6′ 3/4″ horse stall mats and put them side by side on my garage floor. Then, I put my 3/8″ standard DeeZee rubber bed mat on top of them to use as a template. I then but out, using a razor knife, around the bed mat so the horse stall mats fit my bed perfectly.
I put the horse stall mats on the bottom and my standard rubber mat on top. Perfect solution for me and will never have to worry about a piece of OSB wood rotting and warping or a piece of foam core board collapsing.

ParticipantWith my truck and camper combination, I initially started out using the standard rubber bedmat. Twice my camper slapped my roof when at highway speed going over what I describe as whoop-dee-do’s. It did no damage but I was not going to deal with that situation so I went to Tractor Supply and bought a 4×6 horse stall mat on top of my regular bed mat. I believe they are 5/8ths of an inch thick.
Since then I have not had any issues at all. The 4×6 mat fits perfectly with the base of my camper. I am running a 2017 Ford F350 CCSB and my camper is a 2017 Northern Lite 8.11 SE.

ParticipantCongratulations on your new rig. I am running a 2017 F350 with the 6.2 gas engine and having had a diesel in the past, I have a much higher comfort level that I am going to get where I need to go and back without problems.
I carry a 2017 Northern Lite 8.11 and I have not felt underpowered at all with mine, even when towing my 12 foot ATV trailer loaded up with my ATV, coolers etc. Mine has the 3.73 gears so I know I downshift sooner that I would if I still had my 6.2 gas with the 4.30’s but it has not been noticeable to where I wish I had gotten the 4.30’s.
I think more and more people are looking seriously at the newer gas engines than ever before and I personally cannot see me ever having another diesel. I just don’t need it for what I do.
I believe you are really going to enjoy your new truck and look forward to seeing updates from you on how it is performing.

ParticipantI know you said you are out of the hunt now for the 7.3 Jefe4x4 but I can tell you that I absolutely love my 6.2. More than enough power, highly reliable and there is not anything I don’t like about it. Yea sure, I would like to get 30 mpg but who wouldn’t? I am getting 12.5 combined through 40k miles so I am not complaining as these trucks, and especially with the campers on them, are about as aerodynamic as a brick going down the highwy.
If you get back into the hunt, I would not hesitate to look at the 6.2.2017 F350 Super Duty 4x4, CCSB, XLT Premium Package, 6.2 gas, 3.73 rear end, GVWR 11,300 lbs, Payload 4226 lbs, Silver Ingot, Camper Package, Split bench front seat, Upfitter switches, LED Box Lighting, Rear Step Tailgate, Air Lift 5000 Ultimate Airbags with Air Lift WirelessAIR on board compressor kit and remote, Torklift Upper Stableloads, Torklift tie downs w/ Fastguns

ParticipantI think I may have responded to you about this on a different forum, I’m not sure but I went with upper Stableloads on my truck. I also have airbags. I feel very comfortable and stable on and off road with my set up.
I had thought about lower stableloads but quite honestly, did not want to mess with turning them in and out whenever I loaded the camper. I am not sure how much difference they would have made as I already have the camper package on my truck which includes the sway bar.2017 F350 Super Duty 4x4, CCSB, XLT Premium Package, 6.2 gas, 3.73 rear end, GVWR 11,300 lbs, Payload 4226 lbs, Silver Ingot, Camper Package, Split bench front seat, Upfitter switches, LED Box Lighting, Rear Step Tailgate, Air Lift 5000 Ultimate Airbags with Air Lift WirelessAIR on board compressor kit and remote, Torklift Upper Stableloads, Torklift tie downs w/ Fastguns

ParticipantOur Northern Lite is insured through Nationwide, same as our vehicles. Cost is about $32 dollars a month.

ParticipantOur Northern Lite 8.11 has a compartment built for a generator on the right rear side of the camper so that I where we put our Honda 2000. As far as gas goes, I have two, small one gallon plastic cans that I can put underneath the removable rear step. It works great but the fact of the matter is, we rarely use a generator (bought it mostly to run the A/C) because most of our camping is at elevation in the mountains here in Wyoming where it rarely gets hot enough to need it. I like having it though just in case I need power for other things.
