Walk through Overland Expo Pacific Northwest and you’ll quickly realize you’re surrounded by some of the most impressive adventure vehicles in North America.
Towering expedition trucks sit beside compact overlanding Tacomas. Pop-up truck campers share the showgrounds with massive hard-side campers perched atop heavy-duty chassis cabs. Everywhere you look, someone is showing off the latest suspension upgrade, solar innovation, recovery gear, or custom fabrication. It’s sensory overload for anyone who loves trucks and camping.
But this year, something unexpected kept catching my attention. Not a particular camper. Not one specific truck. Truck beds. More specifically, Bowen Customs truck beds.
Everywhere I turned, another beautifully crafted Bowen build appeared. Some were carrying Four Wheel Campers. Others supported Alaskan Campers, Host Campers, Kingstar Campers, or custom overland living spaces. Some belonged to manufacturers displaying their latest products, but most belonged to customers who had driven hundreds—or even thousands—of miles to attend the show.
By Brent Bowen’s count, there were at least 16 Bowen-equipped trucks scattered throughout the expo, and nearly all of them belonged to actual customers. That’s perhaps the greatest compliment any manufacturer can receive. When owners proudly display your work years after buying it, you’ve earned something far more valuable than a sale—you’ve earned trust.
As I sat down with Brent, founder of Bowen Customs, one thing became abundantly clear.
The company’s rapid rise wasn’t luck.
It was the result of an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, thoughtful engineering, and an almost obsessive attention to detail.

From Contractor Beds to Industry Leader
It’s hard to believe Bowen Customs is still such a young company. Brent explained that the business originally began building commercial contractor beds at the end of 2018 and into 2019. The Bowen Customs brand as enthusiasts know it today officially launched in 2021.
Five years.
That’s all it’s taken for Bowen Customs to become one of the most recognizable names in premium truck beds.
Today, the company has built somewhere between 350 and 400 truck beds—a staggering accomplishment considering they were building only about one bed each month during their first year while refining designs and manufacturing processes.
Growth like that simply doesn’t happen because you have a flashy product. It happens because owners become believers.
Truck camper owners are among the most demanding customers in the RV world. They travel thousands of miles over rough roads, carry enormous loads, and often venture far beyond the reach of repair shops. Equipment has to work. There isn’t much room for compromise.
Word travels quickly within this community. When one owner finds something exceptional, others notice.
That’s exactly what’s happened with Bowen Customs.

Beauty Meets Function
Ask Brent what sets Bowen Customs apart, and he doesn’t immediately begin talking about storage compartments or aluminum construction. He talks about intention.
From the beginning, he knew he wasn’t interested in building the least expensive truck bed. Nor was he interested in producing as many beds as possible. Instead, he wanted to create what he believes is the best-looking truck bed on the market without sacrificing functionality.
That’s a surprisingly difficult balance to achieve.
Many commercial flatbeds prioritize utility above everything else. They’re square, simple, and effective.
Bowen’s beds are different.
Sharp body lines, sculpted angles, carefully integrated storage compartments, and flowing proportions give the beds a distinctive appearance that’s instantly recognizable across a crowded campground.
During our conversation I joked that Bowen beds simply make a truck look better. Brent laughed and replied with perhaps the best description I’ve heard yet.
“They have sex appeal.”
He’s absolutely right. Yet none of those design elements exist simply for appearance. Every angle, every compartment, every contour serves a purpose. That’s where Bowen Customs truly separates itself from many competitors.

Built for the Real World
Truck campers have grown dramatically over the past decade. Many modern hard-side campers easily exceed 5,000 pounds when fully loaded with water, batteries, food, and gear.
According to Brent, many of these larger campers simply push beyond what an F-350 can comfortably handle.
His recommendation? Move up to a chassis cab—preferably an F-550—and build the truck correctly from the beginning.
He pointed to one of the show’s standout rigs as an example: our very own Elevation Off Grid Black Edition F-550 equipped with LiquidSpring suspension, a Bowen Customs camper bed, and a Kingstar KRUZR 8 hard-side camper.
The combination, Brent said, checks every box. Outstanding ride quality. Massive storage. Exceptional payload.
The ability to travel virtually anywhere while carrying everything needed for extended adventures. It’s exactly the type of integrated thinking that defines Bowen Customs.
Rather than viewing the truck bed as a standalone product, Brent views it as the foundation upon which an entire adventure vehicle is built.

The Garage That Changed Everything
Like many great inventions, Bowen’s signature garage began with a problem. Customers running 41- and 43-inch super-single tires had nowhere practical to carry a spare.
Throwing it into the camper consumed valuable living space. Mounting it externally affected departure angles. Roof mounting wasn’t realistic due to weight.
So Bowen designed an entirely new solution—the integrated garage. Originally sized specifically to accommodate a 43-inch spare tire, the compartment quickly evolved into something much more versatile.
Customers immediately began finding creative uses Brent had never imagined. Mountain bikes. Inflatable paddleboards. Portable refrigerators. Auxiliary water tanks. Recovery gear. Fishing equipment. Battery systems. Pull-out kitchens. Portable power stations. One owner even requested a pass-through so the family cat could move freely between the truck cab and camper.
Brent smiled as he described watching customers personalize their builds. For him, seeing those ideas develop is one of the most rewarding parts of running the company. In many cases, customer modifications eventually inspire factory options.
It’s a refreshing approach. Instead of assuming the engineers always know best, Bowen Customs treats its customers as collaborators.

Outdoor Living Gets an Upgrade
One of Bowen’s newest ideas debuted earlier this year—a slide-out outdoor kitchen. It’s not just a small drawer with a cutting board, it’s a serious cooking station.
The full-size version extends nearly 10 feet using dual slide mechanisms, creating an outdoor workspace large enough for food preparation, cooking, and cleanup without ever stepping inside the camper.
Recognizing that not every customer needs the largest possible kitchen, Bowen is already developing smaller versions. Half kitchens. Compact prep tables. Configurations that still leave room for oversized spare tires or mountain bikes.
It’s exactly the kind of modular thinking adventure travelers appreciate. Every customer camps differently. Their truck should reflect that.

Storage That Actually Stays Dry
Ask experienced truck camper owners what matters most in exterior storage, and somewhere near the top of the list you’ll hear the same answer. Keeping dust and water out.
It’s surprisingly difficult.
Fine desert dust seems capable of finding its way into almost anything. Water is even worse.
According to Brent, Bowen Customs spent nearly 18 months refining the sealing system used throughout its storage compartments. Different gasket materials. Different latch designs. Repeated testing. Repeated redesign. The result is a storage system the company feels extremely confident in today.
That’s not the sort of engineering customers immediately notice on a showroom floor. But they’ll certainly appreciate it after a week exploring dusty backroads in Utah or crossing rain-soaked mountain passes in British Columbia.

Endless Customization
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from my conversation with Brent was this: Bowen doesn’t simply sell truck beds. The company builds platforms. Customers then transform those platforms into exactly what they need.
Need onboard air? No problem.
Want auxiliary freshwater storage? Easy.
Battery banks. Inverters. Solar equipment. Refrigerators. Interior lighting. MOLLE panels. L-track. Fishing rod storage. Recovery equipment. The possibilities seem almost endless.
Every owner has different priorities. Bowen embraces that. Rather than forcing customers into predetermined packages, the company works with each buyer to understand how they’ll actually use their truck.
That’s becoming increasingly rare in today’s manufacturing world.

The Topper Bed
While truck campers often steal the spotlight, Bowen has quietly developed one of the most innovative solutions for topper owners as well. The Bowen Topper Bed retains the company’s signature dropped-floor design while dramatically increasing exterior storage.
Even more impressive are the internal access panels. Need something stored in an exterior compartment during a rainstorm? Simply reach through one of the interior access doors without ever stepping outside.
It’s one of those features you probably wouldn’t think to ask for—until you’ve used it. Then it becomes indispensable.

Craftsmanship You Can See
Walk around any Bowen truck bed long enough and eventually your eyes settle on the welds. They’re mesmerizing. Perfectly uniform. Consistent. Almost robotic. Except they aren’t. Every visible TIG weld is completed entirely by hand in Colorado.
Brent explained that new welders spend years developing their skills before earning the opportunity to produce the exterior welds customers actually see.
Those gorgeous beads don’t happen overnight. They’re earned. His philosophy is simple. If you’re building a premium product, every detail matters. Even the welds.
It’s difficult to argue with that logic.

Looking Ahead
Despite building nearly 400 truck beds in only five years, Brent still talks like a craftsman more than a businessman. Throughout our conversation he rarely mentioned production goals or sales numbers. Instead, he talked about solving problems. Listening to customers. Improving seals. Developing better accessories. Building cleaner welds. Designing products that make camping easier.
That mindset may ultimately explain Bowen Customs’ remarkable growth more than anything else. Customers recognize authenticity. They recognize companies that genuinely care about their products. And they certainly recognize exceptional craftsmanship.
As I walked away from the Bowen booth one final thought stuck with me. Truck campers may be the stars of our adventures. But increasingly, the truck bed underneath them has become just as important.
After spending an afternoon talking with Brent Bowen—and seeing his work throughout 2026 Overland Expo PNW—it’s easy to understand why so many serious truck camper owners are choosing Bowen Customs as the foundation for their dream builds.
If the first five years have produced nearly 400 handcrafted truck beds and a loyal following of enthusiastic customers, it’s exciting to imagine where the next five years will take this Colorado company.
One thing seems certain.
The next time I walk through an Overland Expo, I’m probably going to lose count of Bowen Customs truck beds all over again.
