ParticipantHello,
I’m new to this forum and need advice. I’m leaving on a long journey in a week or so and am looking to obtain a decent air compressor and tire patch kit to add to my emergency supplies. Advice appreciated.
Thanks!

ParticipantWe like the Viair 88p. Goes to 120psi and does so in a reasonable amount of time because it is powered by attaching clamps directly to the battery rather than through the ‘cigarette lighter’ plug. Cost is very reasonable at under $80. Only caveat is that you must run your engine while operating the pump. If you want more capacity, Viair makes larger pumps. I think I remember Mike reviewing one of the larger ones.
We just picked up a plug kit from 4Wheel Parts. They’re all pretty much the same IMO.

ParticipantThis is a NEWBIE question follow-up: I understand deflating and inflating the tires for off road travel. Are these compressors made to fill the tires while the camper is attached? Or is it necessary to remove the camper in order to fill the tires?
Thanks.

You can totally inflate them while the camper is on the truck.

ModeratorYou should carry some tire plugs, this is the brand I use
Safety SealI have the same brand of air compressor as Kevin, they’re bulletproof but do require connecting to the battery and running the engine.

To be fair, I suspect they all need to have the engine running during use. Mine is hardwired but I definitely have the engine running while in use. That said, the Extreme Outback’s are 100% duty cycle, never overheat and will fill 4 tires pretty quickly. I’ve been told the military uses these compressors in their vehicles.

ParticipantThanks everyone for the advice. I ended up ordering a VIAIR 400P RV and a Tooluxe Tire Repair Kit along with some other emergency equipment.
Now on to the next questions 🙂
