ParticipantI just bought an Arctic Fox 811 which, all tricked out, came to just over $40,000. My insurance company (home and auto combined), Liberty Mutual, will only insure campers up to $25,000 in value. AAA doesn’t even insure them. What do you folks do? Who do you use?
Thanks,

ParticipantTHANK YOU everyone! Interesting theory that the camper is covered by truck insurance when on the truck and by home insurance when in the yard. I will have to look into that. Would love it to be true but I don’t think so, or why would my agency (Liberty Mutual) offer camper insurance as a separate product?
I think I have enough info to find an insurer now, so thanks for the input – much appreciated.

ParticipantThere are independent insurance agencies that deal with insuring RVs, which is very definitely a niche market. The Miller Agency – http://www.millerrvinsurance.com – is one such agency which is highly thought of by the people in the Escapee’s RV Club. Why not give them a call, and get a quote from them?
However, before you do that, take a look at – http://www.rv-dreams.com/rv-insurance-coverages.html – which is the best info source I’ve seen on insuring RVs. In particular, you might want to understand the difference between Market Value/Actual Cash Value; Agreed Value; and Total Loss Replacement/ Purchase Price Guarantee.

InactiveWe have all our insurance through USAA. But USAA doesn’t really do RVs, so they have a relationship with Progressive, passed us over to them, and that’s who carries the policy on our Lance 650. (Granted, not anywhere near the $40K price tag quoted by the OP, but that’s what I’ve got.)

ParticipantOur Allstate insurance covers our new slide-in camper at no additional premium. All we had to do was supply them with a copy of the invoice, showing what we paid. We have both our auto & home insurance with them,.. don’t know if that makes a difference.

ParticipantIt’s interesting that everyone mentions home insurance. My understanding is that the camper is covered by the vehicle insurance when it’s on the truck, and by the homeowners insurance when it’s off the truck on your property.
But what if you don’t own a home, and rent an apartment? Would it be covered by renter’s insurance? What if you are forced to store it elsewhere when off the truck?
And if you take it off the truck at a campground, apparently it’s not covered at all?I think there really needs to be some way of insuring the camper separately.

ParticipantAs is usually the case, it depends on which state you’re in. Here, in Michigan, TCs are considered “cargo”. They do not require a separate license and are insured separately. Our home or auto insurance won’t cover it.
I went with Progressive. I’ve heard some good things about them. - August 2, 2018 at 07:25 #23999

ParticipantI insured my camper through the Good Sam Club insurance. They were very knowledgeable about camper and RV insurance and I have a seperate policy on the camper.

ParticipantOur home and truck policy covers ours as we discovered when sitting down with our agency and them calling to check. Here in Tennessee it is the same as any other cargo.

ParticipantI’ve been with USAA for years, and fully expected them to have me go through Progressive, as that is where we have the boat/motorcycles/motorhome insured. However, I was able to get USAA to insure the new to me TC for a whopping $48/yr. Granted, it’s not worth nearly $40K as in the original post, but they were willing to insure it in-house.
