ParticipantI have Happijac motor jacks on our 2019 Northstar. Manufacturer’s maintenance instructions say to wax every six months. The camper is 15 months old and when I dropped the legs for the spring waxing the finish is rusting and actually pitting down into the base metal in a couple of spots. So waxed it last year and now for the second time.
It is inconceivable to me that something this new is showing this much deterioration. The Happijacks I had on our Hallmark were 15 years old when we sold it and did not have pitting like this. Anyone else having similar problem? We are 400 miles from the ocean here in Tennessee and this looks like what I would expect if we lived near the sea.

KeymasterOurs is doing the same thing in a few spots. Disappointing to say the least.

ParticipantMike,
Given how new our camper is, I really question the quality of the Happijac components. I am sure if I call them, they will tell me rust and pitting are a “lack of maintenance issue”, but I hate to think I am going to have to focus more time on waxing.
What I find disturbing is manufacturers continue to market things, but fail to acknowledge they are not built to meet the rigors of their intended use. These jacks go down the road, they are always outdoors, or at least most of the time. If that is where they live, they should be built to that environment is my opinion.
I would switch brands, but that is an expensive route to go down. 🙁

InactiveMy HJ’s are 11yrs old, but I was under the impression that the newer HJ’s were galvanized??

ParticipantThat was my impression too, but they look like the galvanized coating is very thin and it clearly has spots of rust and one small spot that is pitted and looks like the base metal is showing through.

ParticipantIf there was corrosion already started from improper storage or lack of proper prep a mediocre, or even a very good, galvanizing job is just icing on a bad cake. And once started it is very hard to stop. Sounds like class action suit time!
