I have been looking at the Capri Retreat and on their website they say that their slider window lets water in when it rains. Does anyone here who owns or has owned a Capri Camper had trouble with water getting in through the slider window and if so how do you deal with this issue? Below is what Capri wrote on their website about slider windows.

For 2018, the fixed glass front window is now the standard window. We can almost guarantee that a slider window will let water into your camper during rain. But you’ve still got three choices on that front camper window. The slider window is popular but if you are driving into a heavy rain storm, the gutters where the glass slides, can fill with water faster than the weep holes can drain so when the gutters fill up, the forward motion of the truck pushes the water into the camper. We tell everyone to put towels down if they are driving in rain. The front window should not leak otherwise Your other option is a fixed glass window. Same size, but no chance for a drip or a leak. Third option is no glass at all.

Capri started building my Retreat today. I had the same question you did regarding the issue of the front slider leaking being particular to Capri. They don’t think it is, and have decided the best solution is to simply not offer the slider. I think we’re talking real rain here, not showers. I know real rain, having lived most of my life in Southeast Alaska, and now on the Olympic Peninsula. I can see how the airflow could push the rain hard against the slider.

All that being said, you will really enjoy working with Capri building a camper. They’ve been exceptionally helpful, friendly and flexible.

Joseph, congratulations on your purchase. Could you tell me how long before you are able to pick up your camper from Capri? I am curious how long it takes them to build a camper.

I have posted a lot about pop up campers and I do like them but as I get closer to purchasing one I just think the Capri Retreat is what is best for me. I live where we get a lot of snow and even in the summer time at night it can get pretty chilly and am not 100% sure a pop up could keep me warm not to mention the problem with condensation.

      Coly,

The camper is being built now and should be ready for pick-up in Bozeman, MT by the end of the month. I think Capri moved it forward a bit to ensure the dealer in MT would be able to pick it up in Texas on the next run.

On your point regarding pop-ups. We had originally planned on buying a 4 Wheel Camper, but as I got deeper into the research I became concerned about using it in the wet part of the Pacific North West. A couple of people who live around here, and who also go to and from Southeast Alaska, NWT and the Yukon have had issues with both condensation and mold. We visited the Alaskan Camper shop but they are too heavy for the 1/2 ton truck and my wife was concerned about opening them to the mosquitoes on our trips to the Yukon and Southeast.

We just finished a 3-year road trip in a Sportsmobile Sprinter. During that time we have come to understand that we don’t need a shower, a propane stove or a 3-way fridge — the Sprinter didn’t have any propane. So our Retreat is going to be as light as possible. Capri is being very accommodating by installing an ARB 12v 50 qt fridge we purchased. While we will have a propane heater — the truck isn’t a diesel, so we couldn’t go with the diesel heater we had in the Sprinter — there is no stove.

I’ll post some pictures whe I get them on my flickr account which is https://www.flickr.com/photos/umnak/

      Mike and Mike,

thanks, we hope to have it on our truck later this month — picking it up in Montana. Will add some photographs then.

That camper looks awesome. Is that a refrigerator by your heater underneath the sink area?

Yes, it’s an ARB 50 qt that runs on 12v or 110. We bought it because of the small amount of energy it takes to run (.87amp) and to be able to use it at home as an extra fridge or freezer. Capri put a hinged countertop above it for convenience.

Congratulations on your new Capri. In my opinion you made a very wise choice for a cabover hard-side camper you can safely carry on a 1/2 ton truck.

Capri builds affordable and practical campers that can easily be adapted to buyer’s wants and needs while providing years of good service.
