my wife was organizing some actual photo albums (!) today and came across a pic of my buddy’s old truck camper set-up.
when we head out to the bush, i spend at least a day, sometimes more prepping the truck and camper. we live in the mountains and have HUGE hills every which way we go. fix any issues, bring oil, fuel, anti-freeze, tool box wit enough junk to rebuild an axle, nothing can stop us, pays off, never been broke or stranded in over 20 yrs of bush camping…
then you have my buddy…his idea of prep is grabbing more beer and jerky, never mind the fact his poor truck is overloaded…should mention his camper is an old 10 footer that weighs prob around 3k. should also mention he used to haul it around with his ’94 K1500 wit a tbi 350. and this is up some of the biggest and steepest hills around here (10 000 feet is not uncommon)
like i said, never prepped, and did it for 7 or 8 yrs with no problems till he sold the camper…
100% all stock right down to the factory tires (actually he had a warn winch and bumper on it)…wow, and people worry about 1/2 tons hauling campers…lol

It may be that owners “sweat it ” because they have $60,000 or more tied up in a truck and camper and they intend to go thousands of miles with their families often at highway speeds and do not want to break the law, have a accident, invalidate their insurance and warrantees, have a breakdown or fight to keep a ill handling truck on the road…… but that is just a guess….. maybe all they need is more beer….or a plastic Jesus on the dash.

Larry, that pretty well some’s it up. Some say “ignorance is bliss” but I doubt the ambulance chasers would be willing to cut you any slack if the need for there service arose.

IMO a troll post. Nothing to see here.

I’ve known people like that. All I could do is wonder how they managed to live so long, knowing that I would never get away with living like that. I need peace of mind that comes from knowing that I did my homework, and am hauling safely.

troll post? far from it, real life
not everybody does a 1 ton with big wigs, airbags, swaybars, fastguns and every other new product on the market…i would guess not everyone could afford every new accs for their rig so it would be “correct” in everyone’s eyes if posted online.
his decision to run it, not mine, and no, i followed him all over BC with my rig, and he never presented any kind of danger. he may be pushing his truck, but he drives very carefully (does not need to go 75-80 to the campsites…)

Let’s hear ONE example of someone getting in legal/insurance trouble or their truck crashing and burning when they ran a setup like this guy’s.

Sure it absolutely should be on a 3/4 or 1-ton.
But let’s not look even crazier with false claims about what he’s been successfully doing.

      belive whatever you want
not going to argue with a close-minded individual as to what you think is “real” or not….
just like everyone says you “can’t” haul a camper with 42″ tires on your truck….

In regards to insurance coverage, your insurance policy is a binding contract between you and your carrier. It will state under what conditions you are not covered. Read your policy. If it is not there in black and white, you are covered. While doing something stupid may get your a cancellation notice when it comes time to renew, while the policy is in effect, you are covered. When in doubt check with your agent would be my suggestion.

I know some spots that are usually not so snowy so they are great to visit in this time of the year. For example, we had little to no snow a couple of years back when we had to stay here on Isla Culebra: http://campingculebra.com/ I recommend it to anyone who loves well-organized camping
