We made the trip to Maine in 2013 from our home in Georgia with a small pull-behind . It was our first cross country trip with any type of RV. I don’t recall very many specifics. We chose to cover ground using Interstate 81 with plans to visit the Watkins Glen area but with vintage races the weekend of our arrival (Sept), all campsites were full so we headed east to the Adirondacks which were very beautiful and filled with lakes. What I do remember is that Interstate 81 up north was one of the worst roads we’d ever been on and we quickly started using the smaller highways and byways just to keep our travel trailer on the ground. This can be said for most of the Interstates in the north in general. Also it seems there are no freeways in the northeast as most collect frequent tolls so I’d plan for the more scenic smaller roads. There are many low overheads in the New England area as much of the infrastructure seems to be colonial.
I’m sure you’ve read Angela’s article in TCM and there’s a lot of good info there. I sent her some links to our videos from the trip. I’d recommend Sunset Point CG in Harrington, Maine as the lobster boats come in everyday and Kurt the CG owner will deliver perfectly steamed lobster dinners to your camper for $7 a pound. We had two lobster dinners with corn on the cob & baked potato brought to our door for a total of $18. You have to order in the morning.
If you’d like to see videos of all the places we stayed up there you can search “Travels with Yoly” on YouTube. You’ll have to go way back to 2013 in the archives as there are close to 400 videos on the channel. The “Sunset on Cadillac Mountain” video is quite nice also. All the videos begin with Day 1 etc (numbered sequentially day by day). I’d post a link but I always have trouble posting here if I include a link. The video of Sunset Point CG is Day 9 & 10 on the channel.
Safe travels,
