Yes, in theory, that Federal law about traveling with guns should protect you. In practice, there are jurisdictions in NY that act like they’ve never heard of it.
People from VT trying to fly out of the Albany airport have been arrested when they declare the pistols in their baggage, as they’re required to do by Federal law.
