CompoCloset Cuddy RV Composting Toilet a Better Option for Use Off-Grid

Looking for an easier way to “do your business” when camping off-grid in your RV? You’re in luck. Our friends at CompoCloset recently introduced the Cuddy, a portable composting toilet for adventure seekers looking for an easier, eco-friendly way go number one and number two away from home. Built with style and sustainability in mind, this innovative toilet offers a clean, simple waste management system while promoting a greener environment and a more enjoyable nature call for both women and men alike.

Compact and portable, the Compocloset Cuddy is loaded with functionality. It features a removable solids bin, a 1.7-gallon urine diverter, side handles, a female friendly design, a large “drop zone,” a 9 volt smart LED, a carbon filter that eliminates odors, and an agitator. Made of a thick ABS plastic, the portable toilet can support up to 330 pounds.

“Cuddy is a self contained composting toilet,” said Erica Pugh, Compocloset Director of Marketing. “By Self contained we mean that you don’t have to add compost medium after each use. Rather, the medium is already inside and you use the patent pending retractable agitator (mixer) to stir the solids after each use with the compost medium. It has a fan and filter included and is set up to circulate air through the filter on the inside or vent externally. Cuddy is great for staying off-grid. You can go over two weeks  with two people without having to empty the solids.”

The Compocloset Cuddy is compact and intelligently designed to fit seamlessly in most truck campers, as well as all vans, truck toppers and DIY camping setups. It measures 16 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 17 inches deep, meaning the toilet can be stored or mounted practically anywhere in your rig. Better yet, the composting toilet weighs only 21 pounds, making it light enough to be hauled and used outside in an outdoor privacy enclosure.

The Cuddy stored under a dinette seat in a truck camper.

Unlike typical camping toilets that combine everything together, Cuddy employs a 1.7-gallon urine diverter that separates solid and liquid waste, preventing the formation of sewage and significantly reducing odor. Secondly by starting off with a carbon-rich material, Cuddy kick-starts the composting process, effectively drying out the waste and minimizing odors. Not only does this minimize environmental impact, but it also allows adventurer seekers to contribute positively to nature while enjoying their off-grid lifestyle.

The Cuddy is great for boondocking. In contrast to traditional flushing toilets that consume large amounts of water, the Compocloset Cuddy requires no water nor a black water holding tank. This water-saving design makes it an excellent choice for those looking to preserve their limited water supply and stay off-grid longer. With the Cuddy, adventurers can enjoy their outdoor activities while minimizing their impact on the environment and precious water supply.

Cleaning and maintaining Cuddy is practically hassle-free. Its low-maintenance design requires minimal user intervention, saving time and effort. The removable solids bin—which holds 20-25 uses—simplifies the emptying process, ensuring a user-friendly experience for all adventurers. With Cuddy, users can focus on fun without having to worry about complicated maintenance routines or dreaded bathroom duties.

Power requirements for the CompoCloset Cuddy are minimal and won’t negatively impact your off-grid power set-up. It requires only a portable 9 volt battery for the LED and 12 volt power for the composting toilet’s fan.

Looking for a simpler composting toilet setup? Compocloset offers what they call the Cuddy Lite. The Cuddy Lite is a no-fuss, easy-to-manage toilet that’s perfect for people who are looking for a basic composting toilet for shorter trips. Rather than using an agitator to compost waste it uses a bag and layer method for solid waste instead. This method, while effective, is limited to 10 uses compared to the standard Cuddy which supports up to 25. The fan and carbon filter can be purchased as an optional add-on.

“Our Cuddy Lite model is a more portable composting toilet,” Pugh said. “It is a manual pre-bagged style that uses the layering principle—after each #2 you add a layer of compost medium to cover the #2. It does not need to be plugged in and only requires a 9 volt battery for the LED urine level indicator light (like the Cuddy). People like the easy emptying that a pre-bagged solids bin gives them and the increased portability. The solids do need to emptied more often.”

The Cuddy lists for $800 on sale while the Cuddy Lite sells for $650. Both can be purchased directly on the company’s website.
