BundutecUSA’s New Roan Blends Big Comfort Into a Compact Pop-Up Camper

Sometimes the best ideas don’t start with a blank sheet of paper—they evolve from listening to customers.

That’s exactly how the new Roan from BundutecUSA came to life.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, founder and CEO Rory Willett took many of the features owners already loved in the company’s existing truck campers and combined them into one lightweight, highly capable pop-up.

The result is a compact truck camper that’s equally at home on a weekend fishing trip, an extended overlanding adventure, or a cross-country road trip where keeping weight low is just as important as staying comfortable.

“We like to offer choices,” Willett says. “The Roan gives customers one more model that merges popular features from our existing campers into a brand-new compact camper.”

A Familiar Floorplan—One Important Upgrade

If the Roan looks a little familiar, there’s a good reason.

Its roots trace back to the BundutecUSA Cape, a camper affectionately nicknamed the “cowboy camper” because it was designed with solo travelers or couples in mind.

“The cowboy sometimes likes to take along a cowgirl,” Willett says with a laugh. “And she wants an inside toilet and shower.”

That simple observation sparked the Roan’s development.

The new floorplan keeps the Cape’s efficient layout while adding an interior Thetford 402C cassette toilet and outside shower capability. Up front, a comfortable face-to-face dinette with a pullout table creates an inviting space for meals, remote work, or planning the next day’s adventure.

For a camper measuring less than 8 feet on the floor, it feels remarkably livable.

Staying Under 2,000 Pounds

Lightweight campers continue to be one of the hottest segments in the truck camper market, and Willett knew exactly where he wanted the Roan to land.

“My goal was to keep it under 2,000 pounds dry and under 8 feet in floor length.”

Mission accomplished.

The Roan checks in at just 1,820 pounds dry. Once it’s loaded with fresh water, propane, food, camping gear, and everything else needed for an extended trip, owners can expect a travel-ready weight of around 2,300 pounds.

Willett notes that many owners remove the pickup’s tailgate and leave the camper jacks at camp or at home, reducing the overall load by roughly 175 pounds before heading down the trail.

Built for Half-Tons—But Happiest on a 3/4-Ton

The Roan is sized to fit both 5-foot, 6-inch and 6-foot, 6-inch truck beds, giving buyers plenty of pickup options.

Although properly equipped half-ton trucks with sufficient payload can safely carry the camper, Willett still leans toward heavier-duty pickups.

“I recommend a 3/4-ton truck,” he says. “They provide a much more stable and safer platform, especially when the pavement ends.”

Anyone who has spent time navigating washboard roads, rocky two-tracks, or mountain passes will understand exactly what he means.

Small Footprint. Smart Storage.

One thing BundutecUSA owners consistently appreciate is thoughtful storage, and the Roan continues that tradition.

Compared to the company’s Sable and Wild models, the Roan offers even more interior storage while maintaining a compact footprint.

To help keep weight down, BundutecUSA chose a 56-by-75-inch full-size mattress instead of a queen. It’s topped with 5 inches of gel memory foam over a supportive foam base, proving that downsizing doesn’t have to mean sacrificing a good night’s sleep.

Storage beneath the bed adds valuable room for camping gear, recovery equipment, or bulky items that never seem to fit anywhere else.

Ready for Off-Grid Living

The Roan arrives equipped for life away from RV parks with hookups.

Standard equipment includes a 100 amp hour lithium battery, 200 watts of rooftop solar, 20-amp DC-DC charger, 45-amp converter, electric roof lift, Maxxair roof fan, two-burner cooktop, glass-top sink, and a Truma Combi system that handles both cabin heat and hot water.

Need another battery and more solar? These can be added as options, making the camper even more capable off-grid.

Water capacity includes 22 gallons of fresh water, 8 gallons of gray water, and a 5-gallon cassette toilet.

Need more capacity? Larger fresh and gray water tanks are available as options, although they’ll naturally increase the camper’s overall weight.

Customize It Your Way

Like most BundutecUSA campers, the Roan offers plenty of opportunities to personalize your build.

Popular upgrades include additional 200-watt solar panels, an overhead storage cabinet, insulated cabover skylight, outside shower enclosure, TraxTab fold-down table with recovery track mounts, powered camper jacks, rear-mounted fuel tanks, rear storage box, 12-volt rooftop air conditioner, 1,000- or 2,000-watt inverter, rear entry steps, and an interior reflective insulation package.

Whether your travels take you into the desert, deep forests, or snow-covered mountain trails, buyers can configure the Roan to match their camping style.

Built With Proven Materials

While many RV manufacturers have moved toward all-aluminum framing, BundutecUSA continues to rely on traditional wood construction—and Willett has no plans to change that philosophy.

Why? Because it works.

The camper’s foundation is built from 3/4-inch pine framing combined with 5/8-inch marine-grade plywood for the floor and walls. According to Willett, the design creates a lightweight yet durable structure that’s easier to repair or modify if needed.

Above it all sits one of BundutecUSA’s signature features: a pop-up roof featuring an aluminum framework with foam lamination and a one-piece fiberglass exterior.

“It’s one of the strongest roofs on the market,” Willett says.

We believe him.

Modern Looks, Inside and Out

The Roan sports a clean, contemporary exterior finished in dove gray aluminum siding accented with black diamond-plate trim.

Inside, buyers can currently request custom upholstery while BundutecUSA transitions to a new cushion supplier. Future production models will feature gray seating with charcoal backrests, maintaining the understated look that has become part of the company’s identity.

Pricing

The BundutecUSA Roan starts at $43,000 before options.

Willett also recommends asking dealers about current factory incentives.

At the time of our interview, BundutecUSA was celebrating with a $1,776 “Merica!” discount on all campers.

Final Thoughts

The Roan isn’t designed to be the biggest camper in the BundutecUSA lineup. Instead, it’s aimed squarely at travelers who want a lightweight, easy-to-haul pop-up without giving up the conveniences that make extended camping enjoyable.

By combining a full wet-bath and toilet, smart storage, off-grid capability, and a sub-2,000-pound dry weight, BundutecUSA has created a truck camper that should appeal to everyone from first-time truck camper owners to seasoned backcountry explorers looking to travel lighter.

For adventurers who believe that getting off the beaten path shouldn’t mean leaving comfort behind, the Roan looks ready for the journey.
