Recognizing that reality, onX Offroad has introduced onX SOS, a new emergency rescue add-on designed to give overlanders, truck campers, and off-road enthusiasts another layer of protection when venturing far beyond the pavement.
Developed in partnership with Overwatch x Rescue (OxR), onX SOS connects subscribers directly to OxR’s 24/7 Crisis Response Center during an emergency. Rather than simply providing emergency contact information, the service puts trained rescue coordinators in charge of assessing the situation, coordinating the appropriate response, and remaining involved until help arrives.
Unlike many emergency services that rely solely on cellular coverage, onX SOS is designed to work in the places truck campers love most—well outside the reach of the nearest cell tower. The system creates a two-way text conversation between the user and Overwatch x Rescue coordinators, allowing rescuers to receive your GPS location, assess the emergency, provide guidance, and coordinate the appropriate response while keeping you informed throughout the rescue process.
The service works whether you’re connected by traditional cellular service or communicating via satellite. If you’re within cell coverage, any smartphone capable of sending SMS text messages can access onX SOS, although onX recommends calling 911 first whenever service is available. Once you leave civilization behind, satellite messaging becomes the key. The service is compatible with eligible iPhone and Android devices equipped with carrier-supported satellite messaging plans, as well as popular satellite communicators including Garmin inReach, SPOT X, and ZOLEO. iPhone users can also take advantage of the service with an iPhone 14 or newer running iOS 18.5 or later, making emergency communication possible even when there’s no cell signal.
For truck camper owners who regularly explore remote Forest Service roads, Bureau of Land Management lands, and isolated mountain or desert trails, that capability could be a game changer. In many backcountry emergencies, simply getting a message out is the biggest hurdle. Being able to exchange text messages with professional rescue coordinators who can pinpoint your location and dispatch the appropriate resources adds a significant layer of security to any off-grid adventure.
The new subscription also includes financial protection that goes beyond simple emergency communications. Subscribers receive professional rescue coordination, search and rescue coverage, and emergency evacuation support should the situation require it.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is the price. onX SOS costs $49.99 per year—less than a dollar a week. Considering that a single helicopter evacuation or complex search-and-rescue mission can cost thousands—or even tens of thousands—of dollars in some areas, the annual fee could prove to be one of the least expensive pieces of emergency equipment you carry.
Of course, no rescue membership replaces common sense or careful preparation. Travelers should still carry recovery gear, first-aid supplies, emergency food and water, and the equipment necessary to handle minor mechanical problems. Letting someone know your travel plans before heading into the backcountry remains one of the simplest—and most effective—safety precautions.
