The Bowen Customs Warthog took home first place at the 2023 Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona. The award was given by Truck Camper Adventure, a web magazine for off-road, off-grid truck camper enthusiasts.
As a truck camper rig, the Warthog has it all: 41-inch super singles, a military green vibe, loads of storage, plenty of payload, and a pop-up camper with all of the amenities including a large lithium battery bank and a DC air conditioner.
The Overland Expo West was held in Flagstaff, Arizona, May 19-21. Brent Bowen, Bowen Customs CEO and designer, was thrilled when we told him the news on Sunday. The Bowen Customs truck bed, featuring a three-point articulating subframe, is an amazing 12 feet long and features a massive 60-inch garage forward and six storage compartments in the rear.
“We dreamed up the Warthog build as our version of the ultimate expedition vehicle for our family,” Bowen said. “We wanted a camper that would provide comfort from inclimate weather but also not so grandiose that the kids would not want to go outside. We also wanted plenty of room for our toys and the kids stuff. Think high chairs, bikes, and paddle boards. The Supertramp camper fit the bill as it allowed us a lot of creature comforts while still giving us room for the 5-foot garage to store all the toys!”
Any truck camper rig worth it’s salt needs a good truck, and Bowen Customs chose well by going with an Elevation Off-Grid Black Edition Ram 4500 chassis with an 84-inch cab-to-axle platform, 41-inch EarthRoamer-size tires, and a silky-smooth LiquidSpring Suspension. A custom Buckstop front bumper outfitted with a Warn 16.5ti Winch and Baja Designs Lights not only provides the rig with good looks, but functionality off-road. A 23Zero Roof-Top-Tent above the cab provides even more sleeping space for the kiddies.
“Not only is EOG’s work second to none in the cab-and-chassis market, but we now have a rig that even when fully loaded is nowhere near its max payload. On top of that the Liquid Spring Suspension makes it drive like a dream even on 41-inch tall super singles tires,” Bowen said.
The Supertramp Pop-Up Camper features the latest in technology including a full composite construction, a 330 watt solar power system, a Truma Combi water heater-furnace, bunk beds for the kiddies, electric actuator to raise and lower the roof, a Battle Born 400 amp hour lithium battery bank, and a Dometic RTX 2000 DC air conditioner. Designed to fit a standard 14×14-inch vent opening, the RTX 2000 provides 6,824 BTUs of cooling, weighs only 72 pounds, and consumes only 19.5 amps DC in the ECO mode and 29 amps DC maximum.
