ADV Mobil Redefines Expedition Travel with Custom Built-to-Order Adventure Trucks

Attend any Overland Expo and you’ll quickly discover just how diverse the truck camper market has become. From traditional slide-in campers and chassis-mounted expedition vehicles to lightweight pop-ups, truck toppers, and fully featured hard-side models, there is a truck camping solution for virtually every travel style, budget, and adventure goal.

Among the many truck camper options available today, purpose-built, chassis-mounted expedition trucks represent the pinnacle of engineering and integration. Unlike traditional truck-and-camper combinations that pair products from different manufacturers, these 4WD vehicles are designed as complete systems from the ground up. Every major component—from the chassis and suspension to the habitat, electrical system, water and fuel storage, and weight distribution—is carefully engineered to function together as a cohesive, holistic platform.

But that’s not all. Expedition rigs also feature specialized torsion-free mounting systems that isolate the camper or the habitat from chassis flex, helping protect the living quarters from the stresses encountered on rough roads and remote trails. Combined with larger water and fuel capacities, robust off-grid power systems, and interiors optimized for extended travel, they offer exceptional durability, comfort, and self-sufficiency. Another significant advantage is the integrated cab-to-camper passthrough, which allows occupants to move between the truck and living space without stepping outside—a convenience and safety feature that traditional slide-in truck campers typically cannot provide.

In an era when many expedition vehicles have begun to look remarkably alike, Michigan-based ADV Mobil stands apart. Rather than producing standardized models, ADV Mobil specializes in designing and building fully custom expedition vehicles tailored to the unique needs and travel goals of each client. Every project begins with a blank sheet of paper, allowing the company to create truly one-of-a-kind rigs that reflect the owner’s vision, priorities, and intended adventures.

From chassis selection and suspension design to interior layouts and onboard systems, each ADV Mobil build is engineered from the ground up with long-range travel, durability, and self-sufficiency in mind. Backed by more than 100 years of combined craftsmanship through its European habitat partner, Boxmanufaktur, every ADV Mobil build is engineered from CAD design through final completion as a true one-off vehicle—no templates, no repeat configurations. The result is a carefully crafted expedition platform that blends precision engineering, premium craftsmanship, and thoughtful functionality into a vehicle capable of exploring some of the most remote corners of the world.

ADV Mobil builds are designed for travelers who want more than a typical RV or overland setup. At their core, these rigs focus on blending serious off-road capability with real-world livability, creating platforms that can handle long-distance travel, remote 4×4 terrain, and extended time off-grid without sacrificing comfort or functionality. Each build is purpose-driven, engineered to support a wide range of use cases—from family exploration rigs to mobile workstations and expedition-ready trucks.

What sets ADV Mobil apart is the attention to integration and usability. Rather than treating systems as add-ons, the builds are designed holistically, combining chassis selection, suspension, power management, and interior layout into one, cohesive package. The result is a vehicle that feels intentional, where every component serves a purpose and contributes to the overall travel experience.

Whether built on a medium-duty truck or a heavy-duty platform, ADV Mobil rigs are aimed at users who prioritize capability, flexibility, and self-sufficiency. These are not minimalist campers or luxury motorhomes in the traditional sense—they sit in a space between, offering rugged 4WD performance with thoughtfully designed living spaces that support long-term adventure travel.

“Choose Your Adventure is more than our slogan—it’s our promise,” said Mike Lynch, Owner and Founder of ADV Mobil.  “The biggest thing that makes us different is that we’re custom from the habitat to the chassis—we build exactly what the customer wants. A lot of builders offer a molded shell with a set window placement, bathroom location, kitchen, and bed. What you see is what you get. With our rigs, you get what you want. The only time you’re going to get a no from us is when there’s a possibility that the vehicle would be overweight, because we just won’t do that—we refuse to build anything over GVWR, and that would include gear passengers, fuel, water. After all of that, there has to be payload left over for safety and for insurance purposes.”

To illustrate the level of customization available, we’ve highlighted three very different ADV Mobil builds, each designed around a specific owner’s vision and travel requirements.

ADV008 – Built for Extended Expeditions

Built on a Ford F-550 crew cab chassis with a 19,500-pound GVWR, ADV008 is the ultimate long-haul expedition vehicle, engineered to thrive in remote environments while offering a luxurious, home-like interior. It is designed with comfort and capability in mind, offering sleeping space for up to six people and a highly functional entry wet-bath with hydronic-heated floors. Large onboard systems support extended travel, including a 90-gallon fresh water tank and a 28-gallon grey water tank, along with a 100-gallon fuel capacity for maximum range between stops.

The rig is built around a spacious and highly functional floor plan. The camper features a north-south king-size bed over the cab, while a rear U-shaped dinette converts into an additional queen-size sleeping area. An elevated dinette design allows for the placement of a 90-gallon freshwater tank beneath the seating area, maximizing interior space and off-grid capability. The habitat itself measures 13 feet in length, and the complete vehicle stretches approximately 25 feet from bumper to bumper.

The setup also emphasizes versatility and off-grid performance with both indoor and outdoor kitchens, plus a dedicated home office space for remote work on the road. Key upgrades include a 12 volt mini-split air conditioning system, a LiquidSpring suspension, and a front locking differential for improved traction off-road. A Hydralift cargo system and class-leading storage capacity round out the build, making it one of the most storage-rich and capability-focused setups available.

Designed for extended travel, ADV008 also incorporates a roof-top tent for additional sleeping capacity and is capable of supporting up to 2.2 kilowatts of solar power. The owner opted for a 1.2-kilowatt solar array, providing substantial energy production for off-grid living.

Originally built as one of ADV Mobil’s demonstration vehicles, ADV008 was purchased directly from a show by a customer who was determined to own it. Since then, the vehicle has undergone several custom modifications. The rear Hydralift system, originally intended for carrying a motorcycle, was transformed into a versatile outdoor living platform. ADV Mobil fabricated a custom aluminum storage box mounted on the lift, featuring a slide-out pellet smoker grill on the passenger side and a large 12-volt refrigerator/freezer on the driver’s side for convenient outdoor access. The top of the box can also accommodate up to four bicycles using 1UP bike carriers or similar mounting systems. When deployed, the Hydralift lowers the entire setup to ground level for easy access and then raises it for travel, preserving ground clearance, departure angle, and off-road capability.

ADV013 – Compact, Capable, and Fully-Featured

ADV013 was designed for travelers who want serious expedition capability in a more compact and maneuverable package. Measuring just 23 feet in overall length, it strikes an impressive balance between off-road performance, drivability, and the comfort expected from a fully equipped overland vehicle. Built on a Ford F-600 regular-cab chassis with a 22,000-pound GVWR, the truck is ideally suited for one or two travelers, although a flip-up center console can accommodate a third passenger when needed.

Despite its relatively compact size, ADV013 is equipped for extended off-grid travel. The inside layout sleeps up to four people and includes an entry wet bath with hydronic heated floors, a 90-gallon fresh water tank, 28-gallon grey water tank, and 70 gallons of fuel capacity. Both indoor and outdoor kitchens are incorporated into the design, along with a comfortable U-shaped dinette that serves as a central gathering space inside the habitat.

Technology and comfort features are equally impressive. The truck is equipped with a premium Morel HiFi sound system, an optional 360-degree camera monitoring system, and a Mastervolt CZone electrical management system for simplified control of onboard systems. A 169-inch wheelbase, a LiquidSpring adaptive suspension, and a rear Hydrolift dual-sport lift help ensure that ADV013 remains capable both on and off pavement.

ADV013 currently serves as ADV Mobil’s show truck and has been extensively used by founder Mike Lynch to showcase the company’s capabilities. The vehicle is expected to be offered for sale following 2026 Overland Expo East as ADV Mobil prepares to debut a new show truck currently under construction in Germany. Additional features include a front-mounted winch and a Buckstop front bumper, further enhancing the truck’s durability and expedition-ready credentials. As a showcase of ADV Mobil’s design philosophy, ADV013 demonstrates how a relatively compact platform can deliver exceptional capability, comfort, and versatility for extended adventure travel.

ADV010 – Versatile Design Meets Family-Focused Adventure

ADV010 is one of ADV Mobil’s most unique builds, designed specifically for customers who want the flexibility of a removable truck camper without sacrificing the comfort and capability of a fully integrated expedition vehicle. Built on a Ram 5500 chassis with a 19,500-pound GVWR, the rig features a custom habitat mounted to a flatbed platform, allowing the owner to remove the camper when needed while still benefiting from a highly capable overland platform. Measuring approximately 13 feet overall, with a 10.5-foot habitat and integrated rear departure angle, the design balances interior space with off-road performance.

The project began when the customer approached ADV Mobil with an existing flatbed and requested that it be retained if possible. Rather than replacing the bed, ADV Mobil engineered a custom torsion-free mounting system that would allow the chassis to flex independently of the habitat. This is a critical consideration for expedition vehicles, as frame twist can cause significant damage to a rigidly mounted camper. The resulting system provides 6 to 7 inches of flex—far more than the owner is likely to encounter—while protecting the habitat from stress and maintaining durability in challenging terrain.

Designed with family travel in mind, ADV010 offers sleeping accommodations for up to six people. The layout includes a north-south California king-size bed over the cab, two rear bunks for children, a convertible dinette sleeper, and a Super Pacific Cloud Cap rooftop tent for additional sleeping space. Unlike many of ADV Mobil’s more recent entry-bath floorplans, this build features a dedicated wet bath positioned behind the kitchen and adjacent to the rear bunks. The arrangement creates one of the most open and spacious interiors ADV Mobil has produced while still maintaining excellent functionality for extended travel.

The interior showcases the owner’s desire for premium craftsmanship and distinctive materials. Highlights include hand-built German KCT glass windows and a beautiful teak floor crafted from reclaimed sailboat materials. Supporting the truck’s off-grid capabilities is a Victron Energy electrical system, while a LiquidSpring suspension paired with a Tru-Earth leveling system provides enhanced ride quality, stability, and campsite convenience. A Buckstop bumper and wheel package further improves durability and off-road capability.

ADV010 perfectly illustrates ADV Mobil’s approach to custom vehicle design. No two ADV Mobil builds are alike, and every project is developed through an extensive collaborative process with the customer. Using detailed 3D CAD modeling, layouts and systems can undergo multiple revisions before construction begins, allowing clients to visualize and refine every aspect of their vehicle. The result is a truly bespoke expedition platform built around the owner’s specific travel style, priorities, and vision for adventure.

What sets ADV Mobil apart from the competition?

Every ADV Mobil build begins with a purpose-built habitat shell engineered from premium sandwich composite panels manufactured by Boxmanufaktur in Europe. This foundation delivers exceptional thermal performance with no thermal bridging, integrated KCT dual-pane glass windows and skylights, and a torsion-free mounting system designed to maintain structural integrity in demanding off-road environments.

“There are a lot of good builders, but Boxmanufaktur has been doing this for three generations now. Their tolerances are 2 millimeters, and it’s what we engineer in our drawings,” Lynch said. “Everything is done in three dimensional on SolidWorks. Prior to anything being built—and quite honestly, before any money is exchanged with our customers—we want people to see what they’re getting before we take their money. And that’s our rule, not a customer’s rule. We’ve had a lot of people at shows want to give us deposits, and as much as I want to take up a deposit, I want them to see what they’re getting and know how much it’s going to cost before any promises are made or exchanges of money.”

Inside, powder-coated aluminum cabinetry with real wood finishes combines durability with refined craftsmanship. Hydronic heated floors, leather-wrapped cab seats, and advanced soundproofing create a quiet, comfortable living environment wherever the road leads.

ADV Mobil trucks are engineered to go well beyond where the pavement ends. Hutchinson dual bead lock wheels and a stationary CTIS system allow drivers to air down for maximum traction over slickrock, sand, and uneven terrain. Severe-duty brake upgrades, front and rear locking differentials, and an available 6×6 conversion provide the traction and control needed for remote mountain passes, desert crossings, and technical off-road conditions.

Each ADV Mobil rig is designed with integrated security features to support remote travel and extended off-grid stays. Standard equipment includes a cab-to-habitat pass-through door, three-point locking systems on all entry points, and 360 degree perimeter lighting for improved visibility in low-light environments. Optional FLIR night-vision and 360 degree camera systems further enhance situational awareness and campsite monitoring in remote locations.

The last couple of years, Lynch has seen a definite trend as it relates to batteries, air conditioning, and water capacities.

“We’re using DC air conditioners only, he said. “We’re using everything from Nomadic Cooling to Dometic rooftop systems, the RTX 2000s been a good product for us,” he said. “The Nomadic mini split systems have been very good. For our electrical systems, we’re using Victron and Mastervolt systems. For the trucks, it’s anywhere from 550 to 2,200 amp-hours of lithium. That’s where a customer is in complete control of capacities and budget because that’s a big player there. Water can be anywhere from 70 to 110 or 120 gallons. Anything larger just isn’t practical.”

ADV Mobil keeps its battery systems safely housed inside the habitat, relying on a combination of rooftop solar and DC-to-DC charging while traveling and camping off-grid. Solar plays a central role in the company’s energy strategy, with most builds equipped with between 1.5 and 2.5 kilowatts of solar generating capacity, allowing owners to remain self-sufficient for extended periods off-grid.

Customers can choose between traditional rigid solar panels or military-grade flexible panels that are durable enough to be walked on. While the flexible panels offer greater versatility and a cleaner roof profile, Lynch explains that they come at a significant premium, typically costing about three times as much as conventional rigid panels. Not only that, but compared to rigid panels, flexible panels have a shorter lifespan, about three years.

Anyone who spends a few minutes talking with Lynch quickly realizes that this is more than just a business to him. His passion for expedition vehicles, technology, and adventure travel comes through in every conversation.

“We build six to eight adventure trucks a year, and 30 to 40 vans a year, but our passion and love is trucks. We’ve built 20 trucks in 4.5 years through the ups and downs of COVID and tariffs and all of that. It seems to be a little bit more stable now with our pricing structure, we take the risk of any tariffs or anything like that. We know how it feels, so we won’t push that onto a customer who we’re going to have a long-term relationship with. Our customers are everything,” Lynch said.
