Phoenix L2 Flatbed

Phoenix Pop-Up Campers takes a decidedly different approach to building truck campers. Rather than mass-producing a handful of fixed floorplans and asking buyers to make them work with their trucks, Phoenix builds each camper to order around the customer’s specific vehicle and camping needs. Based in Commerce City, Colorado, the family-operated company has been building custom campers for nearly 40 years under the direction of Rob Rowe. Phoenix works directly with its customers and sells factory-direct, allowing buyers to specify everything from the camper’s dimensions and floorplan to fabrics, countertops, cabinetry, equipment, and other options. The company’s current lineup includes the Shell, Stealthy Mini, CyberPhoenix, Level 1, and Level 2, along with corresponding flatbed configurations and specialty builds, including hardwall campers.

Construction is one of Phoenix’s strong suits. Its campers are built around a double-welded aluminum cage frame covered with fiberglass siding and insulated with Dow R-5 extruded polystyrene foam in the walls, floor, and ceiling. Above the hard body is a triple-layer insulated soft wall that allows the roof to collapse for travel, reducing overall height, wind resistance, and the camper’s center of gravity. An electric push-button roof lift makes setup easy, while the molded aerodynamic cabover helps give Phoenix campers their distinctive appearance. The combination of aluminum framing, fiberglass exterior construction, foam insulation, and an insulated soft wall also makes these campers suitable for travel well beyond the traditional three-season role associated with many pop-ups.

Phoenix Level 1

Phoenix’s Level system makes it relatively easy to choose how elaborate the finished camper will be. The Level 1 provides most of the amenities buyers expect in a fully equipped truck camper, including a queen-size bed, convertible dinette, forced-air furnace, 20-gallon fresh-water system, sink and stove, refrigerator/freezer, 200Ah lithium battery bank, and 200 watts of solar. The Level 2 builds on that package by adding an interior shower, cassette toilet, and hot-water system for buyers who want a self-contained bathroom. Phoenix also offers these configurations as flatbed campers, where eliminating the pickup’s bed rails and wheel wells provides additional freedom for interior layouts and storage. Because every camper is custom-built, dimensions, floor lengths, weights, and capacities can vary depending on the truck and options selected.

Perhaps the biggest appeal of Phoenix, however, is the sheer variety of trucks the company is willing to accommodate. Instead of designing exclusively around conventional Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet pickups, Phoenix has built campers for everything from midsize trucks and full-size pickups to Jeeps, flatbeds, and even unconventional vehicles. The camper can be tailored to the dimensions and payload capacity of the customer’s particular truck, including builds designed to allow the tailgate to close or to meet specific overall-height requirements. For buyers who don’t want an off-the-shelf camper—and who appreciate having a camper designed around both their truck and the way they actually camp—Phoenix remains one of the most customizable choices in the truck camper industry.
